  1. Cats and dogs, as defined in current passenger tariffs, may be transported in the cabin or baggage compartment when in a container and accompanied by a passenger or shipped as cargo.
  2. Ethiopian Airlines accepts only dogs and cats in the cabin, with a limited number allowed per compartment:

Aircraft Type C9 Class Economy Class
Wide Body     2             4
Narrow Body     1             2

Note: You must bring your pet in a box that does not exceed 55 x 40 x 20 cm and 8 kg (including the container). If the size or weight is more, the pet must be transported in the aircraft hold.

  1. If the cage is larger than allowed for cabin travel, or the total weight (pet + cage) is more than 8 kg and up to 45 kg, it will be transported in the hold.

  2. Pets (including cage) weighing more than 45 kg must be transported as cargo, following cargo procedures.

  3. Seeing-eye dogs (trained to assist visually impaired passengers), when harnessed and muzzled, may travel in the cabin on all Ethiopian Airlines aircraft at no charge. This depends on local or government restrictions.

  4. Hearing-ear dogs (trained to assist hearing-impaired passengers), when harnessed and muzzled, may also travel in the cabin for free. This requires advance arrangements and is subject to local or government restrictions.

  5. Service dogs for visually or hearing-impaired passengers travel free and can stay in the cabin. You must notify the airline in advance.

Snub-nosed dog and cat breeds are not accepted, due to increased breathing risks caused by stress and temperature changes during transport.

    ●       Pets are accepted in the cabin on all Ethiopian Q-400 aircraft.

    ●       Pets (in containers) accompanied by passengers or shipped as cargo may be carried in the baggage compartment.

    ●       You must make advance arrangements for all pet transport.

    • You must specify the type of pet and the size of the container when making a reservation.
    • Ethiopian does not accept emotional support or psychiatric service animals in the cabin unless the passenger provides valid documentation (no older than one year) from a licensed mental health professional (e.g. psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical social worker, or medical doctor) on official letterhead.

    • Pet acceptance rules vary by country. Check with your nearest Ethiopian Airlines office or travel agent.

    • For interline connections, check the policy of the other carrier.

    • Charges for pets in the cabin or hold apply at excess baggage rates, regardless of other baggage.
