The airport became operational in January 2003 and is one of the most convenient and welcoming airports on the continent. The facilities are designed to streamline your departure and arrival.

The airport terminal featured arrival and departure halls for domestic and international passengers, a VIP lounge, airport security office and various offices and counters for different airlines and airways, customs, Immigration and Nationality Affairs Authority, airport customs office and counter, postal service offices, banks, duty free and other kinds of shops such as jewelry stores, cultural clothing and souvenirs, as well as bars and restaurants. An 11-meter-high air traffic control tower and a fire and rescue building were also built.

With such facilities, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport has become the country's main international gateway.

Terminal II of the new Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is dedicated to serving international flights, while Terminal I serves all domestic flights. Terminal I is located in the old airport building and handles all domestic and regional flights.
